Cooking with the sun

I have a conservatory on my house. I bought it with some of my retirement money in 2015. Every one warned me not to get one. They said it will be too cold in the Winter and too hot in the summer.

In winter I just open the internal doors and the woodburner warms it. It does get warm in there in summer. I use it to my advantage, though. It warms the house in Spring if I open the inner doors, I grow most of my seedlings in there in Spring, and in summer I dehydrate in there and now cook. I also sit in there on an evening as it is still warm from the sun and is lit by solar lights.

I made some Morrocan stew yesterday (brown lentils, Harissa paste, passatta, tomato puree, paprika, onion and veg) and cooked some rice as well using the power of the sun in my conservatory. I boiled both pots for 1 minute and then placed them in the hot, sunny room. The rice was ready in 2 hours and the stew in nearly 6. Next time I am going to put a none stick baking sheet in there and try frying an egg on it.

Don’t you just love it when an idea works?
