We are having family over for a Halloween meal. I wanted to make it special as the grand children are getting to the age when they will not be children much longer. I did not want to spend a lot of money and wreck my food budget, though. Ordinary food can be made special with just some time and imagination. Here are some of the things that we are making for our special meal.
Fruit pies with spooky faces made from short crust pastry and foraged blackberries and apples.
This is just a normal fruit pie that we would have on any normal day of the week but it is made to feel like Halloween simply by cutting a face in the pastry pie lid
Halloween cup cakes
These are just ordinary cup cakes or buns that we have iced with butter icing and then used 2 packets of 35p sweets from Asda for the top picture and then fondant for the monster ones in the second picture
Pumpkin satsumas
If you are trying to be healthy this is a way of making an ordinary fruit look like a pumpkin. We used a slither of celery in the top.
Marshmallow ghouls
I forgot to take any pictures of these but they were large marshmallows with a face piped on the top in a small paper case with melted chocolate in to keep the marshmallows standing up.
Mummy hotdogs
Spooky pizza pastries
These can be made with any cutters that you have or you could even do them in the shape of a hand. I just mixed tomato puree, tomato sauce, mixed herbs and some garlic in a cup and spread it on some puff pastry and sprinkled cheese on top. Pizza dough could also be used,
What kinds of things do you like to make food wise for Halloween that do not cost a lot of money?
Oh My! These halloween foods are fantastic! I will definitely be trying out these – you are so creative! I am following some of your ideas to make pies / cakes look more festive/holiday inspired and am gathering little cookie cutter shapes etc. Great ideas – thankyou!
I have a whole box of cutters I have bought in sales. They are so useful. I have had some nice ones from Poundland too. Sorry for the late reply. Did you make any Halloween treats?
