Last January I got one of the £1.50 veg boxes from Lidl. It had a few yellow and orange tomatoes in it. One was squashed and so I saved some seeds. Only one germinated, but it was enough to give me plenty of yellow tomatoes this year to brighten up my salad. My first one has ripened. It tastes lovely.
We are told not to grow food from supermarket produce. It is true that it doesn’t always turn out the same as the parent plants, but I have always had a successful crop. All of my peppers this year are grown from produce from The Company Shop. I have grown pointed ones for the first time. So little effort, but a high reward. This can be grown on a window sill, in a greenhouse or outside. All of my tomatoes are outside due to lack of space. I grow some of them up the back of the tin shed which keeps them warm and protected.
What is your favourite thing that you have grown from a supermarket seed this year?

I am trying…I planted seeds from supermarket bell peppers. Something is forming. We’ll see what happens.
Also tried drying seeds from a supermarket tomato. I just planted it in my hydroponic setup, so, again, it’s a waiting game.
Fingers crossed. Good luck
Well, the parent pepper was chunky, with thick walls. The offspring is short and narrow, with thin walls.
The tomatoes never sprouted.
Aww that is a shame. Did you ferment the gunk off the tomato seeds before planting? Over 30 of my tomato seeds germinated and gave me a good crop this year. Yes they don’t always come out like their parent plant. I got some pointed peppers from my capsicums but also true ones as well. It is free food and so I don’t mind. Hope you have better luck in future.
By the way, I found another source of seeds in our area: our library has a seed exchange! Today I signed out a packet of dwarf tomato seeds, which I’m gong to try to grow hydroponically.
Ooh. Interesting. I would love to know how they do. We don’t have anything like that locally
