Have you ever read the ingredient label on a Doritos chip packet? I have heard that some of the ingredients are actually carcinogenic, and can cause cancer. We love our nachos but I have stopped buying the chips to protect our health. I am not taking any chances. Instead I cut up stale wraps and toast them in the air fryer. This saves on waste and gives us a treat.
The ones I made today were from our recent BBQs. A couple were homemade broken ones, and one was a wholemeal one that had been bought by my daughter. I wanted to make plain Dorito type chips today as I want to use them with hummus and some pepper dip in a pickie lunch. Other times I will use salt or spices as flavouring. I especially like smoked paprika on them, or thyme and lemon zest.
Literally all you do is cut a wrap into small triangles and either mist with oil or toss in a bowl with a small amount of oil in it. If you want them flavoured or salted you can spread spices on an lightly oiled wrap before cutting it into triangle.
I cook them on high until golden (about 5 mins). You can bake them in an oven if you do not have an air fryer.
Some of these chips I will use to make nachos with left over chilli and some cheese sprinkled on top. I also like them as a snack on their own, or to eat with salsa, dips, hummus etc. Some times I crush them and use them to coat small pieces of chicken to make strips. Other times I will blend them and add them to meat balls to bulk them out. I remember making a dish with tuna and eggs and have the chips crushed on top for a bit of crunch as well. Who knew that you could make so many treats and copy junk food but keep it reasonably healthy?
We love pickie meals in summer as we can use little bits of anything that we have left. This is how I make my wraps that I make my chips from.
Great idea toni, thank you x
My hubby refuses to have doritos in our house due to the exact reasons you’ve mentioned, he’s never “told” me what to do tbh and I love nachos, this has given me the ability now to sate my guilty pleasure without his “look” of displeasure and/or a lecture lol.
I have some wraps that actually need using, a tiny portion of chilli in the freezer alongside frozen grated cheese and about quarter avocado, also salsa in the fridge 😋, looking forward to trying these xx
That sounds like a healthy meal. Thanks for sharing
Just tried this out with a leftover wrap, cut up, sprinkled with oil, salt and pepper and a sprinkle of chilli powder.
Cooked at 200 degrees for 5 minutes in my air fryer and then a quick blast for 2 mins at 240 degrees.
Absolutely delicious. Thank you.
No worries. I have a big jar full that I keep taking a handful from at the moment. They have smoked paprika on. Thanks for sharing your instructions. Mine would be burnt to a crisp doing them that long in my air fryer, and I guess it depends how big that you cut them. Glad that you like them. A healthy alternative to the supermarket ones
