Get ready for Christmas now to save money and stress

I can hear people shouting at me now as the word Christmas can feel like a swear word in August.  I had the same reaction myself when I saw Christmas items being sold in a shop a few days ago.  However, I realised that I have been getting ready for Christmas since January when I bought reduced mincemeat and wrapping paper in the Christmas sales.  Getting ready for Christmas now saves me so much money and stress. It helps me enjoy special time with my family.  I am not an exhausted, frazzled, bankrupt mess.

Here are some of the things that I start doing now.

  1.  Talk to family and friends now and arrange when we are going to spend time together so that it can be put in the diary.  Two of my family often work Christmas and so we will often get together on another weekend and pretend it is our Christmas day.
  2. Plan your budget and start putting money away. Be more intentional this Christmas
  3. Have a conversation about presents with family and friends.  Are we buying them?  Do you we have an amount that we are spending?  My friends and I decided not to give presents, or just do a token. (They got gingerbread  reindeer in a little plastic bag with ribbon tied around last year, or a small bag of fudge). A couple of years ago we decided as a family to do a secret Santa but make it a reasonable present of £60 so that it was something valuable or was really needed.  We might have spent £25 on each person before.  It saved us a lot of money as it was getting expensive as the family expanded and my children got married and had relationships.  The large gift meant that we were able to receive things that we really wanted but couldn’t really afford for ourselves.  Any one under 18 still gets presents from all of us.
  4. Book leave for the Christmas period from work now.  You might want to extend your Christmas, or ensure that you can all spend some time together if you work shifts and Christmas is just a normal work day as it used to be for me.  Maybe you want to book a few days off before Christmas so that you are not rushing to get everything done.  You might not be granted the time off that you want, but it will give you time to make other arrangements with family or to arrange swaps with other workers. I used to always swap my shift to a late shift on Christmas so that I could open the presents with my children.  Mr S is negotiating getting Christmas day off at the moment so that I am not on my own as other family members are working or have arranged Christmas Day else where.
  5. Buy items in the sales.  There are lots of sales on at the moment and I have been buying odd items for my grandson, especially clothes items that will fit him next year that I wrap up as a stocking filler.
  6. Put an extra food item for Christmas into my shopping each week.  This might be icing for the cake, a bottle of pop, sugar for baking etc.  This reduces the expense nearer the time.  A supermarket was selling Turkey  legs at a reduced price recently and so I bought a couple and froze them.  I can then just buy a Turkey crown and it works out cheaper than buying a whole Turkey and takes less cooking time.  If I buy items like sweets I have to get Mr S to lock them in his car or else I would be buying them again!
  7. Be looking on Vinted, car boot sales for presents.  There is nothing wrong with second hand presents, especially for young children.  They will get more or you will save money.
  8. Start making presents.  This is the perfect time to be making Blackberry infused gin, jams and chutney for a small hamper, or to start knitting that winter jumper or blanket.  I intend to do more crafted stocking fillers this year.
  9. Start saving money on a supermarket store card.  Many give you a bonus to spend in December.
  10. Make your Christmas cake.  It will taste nicer if matured and the ingredients will probably cost more as it gets nearer to Christmas.
  11. Start looking for ideas for recipes for Christmas food.  We always make some of our Christmas favourites, but I like to make some things that are different and special each year.  In the past this has been things like the sausage wreath. This year I want to make my favourite Lebkuchen biscuits as they have become so expensive in the shops now.  Look for recipes of what to do with left overs too.
  12. Start making some food and storing it over the next few months, if you have room in your freezer.  I will be making different truffles and freezing them (they will just need the chocolate putting on when I take them out), and next month I am going to make some festive pasties with chicken and stuffing in.
  13. Take a family photo with bobble hats on or winter jumpers and print your own personal cards.  The people that I post cards to are often people from my past, or old relatives,  and they like to see what we look like now.
  14. Decide who is hosting and what items other people will supply. In our family we take turns. One will supply the meat, an other the sides, and another the desserts.  The person who is hosting provides the drinks.
  15. Check your Christmas lights and decorations.  When it came to putting up my tree last year mine didn’t work. This led me to have to buy more expensive lights in a hurry.  Do an inventory of the Christmas things that you have.  You might have lots of paper and cards from last year and so this will maybe save you picking up any more.  Children like crafting decorations in the December if you know that you have things missing.
  16. Ask family for their wish list for presents.  You can then be looking out early for the best deals.
  17. Plan your Christmas market trips with family and friends.  I don’t often buy anything from these markets but I pinch ideas of things to make.  The atmosphere also gets me into the holiday mood.
  18. Start decluttering to make room for all the new items you may receive, and get rid of any broken and tatty decorations, or those that you don’t like.
  19. Look where you can volunteer if you are going to be alone, or invite some one that you think might be alone as well. Look out for locally organised free events.  Our village organise things for children and a party for the elderly.  Sometimes that is the only Christmas that they get. I have spent Festive Days alone when my children have gone to spend time with other parents, and it is lonely.  The sight of happy families walking along the street, or laughter and Christmas songs drifting through the wall can easily make someone feel worse if they are missing family at Christmas, or find themselves alone. This is a link to a blog I wrote a while ago about spending Christmas alone
  20. Work on your attitude.  Tell yourself that you are going to enjoy this Christmas and do lots of things to get yourself into the mood.  I did that the year before my Mum had to be locked down in a home, and then died.  I am so glad that I put a lot of effort and didn’t spoil Christmas for other people because I was stressed, tired and grumpy. We played games and really had fun, and I was relaxed because I was organised.  Those memories stay with me now and we always mention that Christmas around the dinner table as we eat our Christmas dinner.  Even if you think that you hate Christmas, as I did. you can make it fun and enjoy it.  I also had lots of fun another year when I was on my own before I had a family.  I volunteered at a Christmas party for the Homeless.  I have never laughed or sung as much.

I used to hate Christmas and never got time to enjoy it.  It was a lot of work and I was rushed on the day as I often had to go to work later for the late shift.  By being organised, I now enjoy our Christmas time together and I am now looking forward to this year.  How do you get ready for Christmas, and do you start early?

Well I think about Christmas after my daughter’s birthday towards the end of November but actually I think you are right. It would be good to be a little better prepared. I’ll start by making blackberry whisky today 😋😆

Funny you post this today Toni as I bought 2 sticking fillers & a main present on EBay last night which as saved me lots of money.
I bought 17 chocolate oranges 🍊 from Asda on sat as they are on offer £1 each I will need about 40 as I knit & sell Christmas choc oranges with covers so I have saved there too.
Am gathering ingredients to make 6 Christmas cakes as gifts so will be busy like you scouring for bargains.
Asda also have bubble wands reduced now to 30p each.
A great post with brilliant tips Toni thank you x

ooh. I will have to have a look to see if they have the chocolate oranges at ours. Thanks. I cover them in icing to look like bobble hats. Thanks for sharing. I hope that you have managed to get enough mixed fruit for your cakes. It is still in short supply here.

Great post.. I love a decent Christmas Cake so will make them soon and feed them well. The very least I make is fabric tote bags and wrap some pressies in them but have made truffles before.. think I might do them with Emily as she is very patient and loves to make / give home made things. She loves to make Gingerbread too.

Yes I can’t wait until my grandson is old enough to make Christmas presents with. We make our cake in September and so it is quite boozy by Christmas. The tote bags is a good idea. Thanks for sharing

Great ideas Toni! – and I’m with you on hiding the chocolates!
We have 2 birthdays here 25th and 26th so also have to ensure that each girl feels her birthday is special. I also try and buy some joints of meet that are usually on sale in the days after Christmas and New Year as there are some great bargains which help.

Yes, you can get some good half price offers on meat and salmon before Christmas as well. We are still using some that we froze now. Thaks for sharing

Great ideas Toni, I buy chocolates early but then I eat them, so not always cost effective. I’ve already got our Christmas pud I bought that in January

Yep I have eaten so many selection boxes and Easter eggs over the years I have lost count. I am glad that it is not only me that does it. Mr S hides them or locks them away now. Thanks for sharing

Funny you should write about Christmas, l ordered stocking fillers for all the Grandchildren yesterday, l also buy big bags of miniature chocolate bars then divide them into five and put them into their Christmas bags, much cheaper than selection boxes.

Great idea. I used to buy 4 packs of chocolate bars discounted and do the same, but I couldn’t trust myself now. Thanks for sharing

Love your post Toni . We do a secret Santa just for adults & I give a small hamper to neighbours & some close friends. I forget each year to record what I’ve made or given so that’s something I need to do this year .
I’ve sewn some purses & making some bags to hold the hampers . They can be reused in bathrooms etc . Thanks for the heads up . At least I’ve made some jams . I will start my list this week . X

I have enough Christmas paper and cards for this year and next year now I have put all in one place.

I have 2 Christmas presents for OH great grandkids only 5 more to go. We tend to spend about £40 on his older kids and upto £100 on our son as he normally wants an XBox game. I only have a brother and partner but they are a bit like us and don’t need anything so we tend not to buy presents and just spend day together. I like Christmas and love making decorations but seem to run out of steam as I get nearer to Christmas because so tired! I need to try to be more organised this year to save time, money and energy

I must admit that I run out of steam some years. I have so many ideas of things that I want to do, but never get round to them all. Thanks for sharing

What we’ve done the last couple of years is to organise things for everyone to do together during December. Then, when you get to the big day there is much less stress as you have already had a good time together so it is just another of those days and doesn’t have all your hopes hanging on it! Some of the things cost money but you can look for cheaper versions like the local am dram panto or the school day for professional pantos. Light shows at local parks are often cheaper and as nice as the commercial versions. Then we have a family board game day, walks and visits to the displays in NT houses using our tickets. As the chief Christmas day organiser this works so much better for me and everyone else loves the getting together which we struggle to do at other times.

Hi toni the dreaded. Christmas word, but yes if you have large families you have to be organised,I only have a handful of gifts to buy but slowly start looking out for them ,I do like traditional Christmas foods, past few years been buying Christmas cake and mince pies but quite disappointed with them ,so this year will make my own starting with the cake,it’s only me but I do like certain things, chocolates I might just make some truffles,I don’t know if you have a recipe for any,my mum use to make her version of Bailey’s but lost recipe it used to have condensed milk and think brandy will have to try and find recipe for it,Christmas day I’ll probably working in the afternoon in the care home I work ,but that suits me as I live alone,I like to decorate house in a small way ,but not till December,I don’t know about you but when watching t v the adds really get to me constant commercials what’s next to buy I often do a job now or turn tv off ,but my plans for Christmas low key but enjoyable to me

    • ToniG August 26, 2024 at 12:05 pm - Reply

I have never made Bailey’s truffles as we don’t drink but I am sure there will be lots of recipes on the internet. It sounds like you will still make your Christmas enjoyable, and I used to quite like working on Christmas day as it is nice to make Christmas special for others. Thanks for sharing

Great ideas! I have started already too. We are giving family experiences this year. Purchasing discounted tickets for polar express train ride for great grands and their parents. We live 6 hours or more from 3 daughters, married grands, and great grand babies. We usually have our family Christmas weekend the first weekend in Dec. It’s filled with games, meals ( each family brings a dish from the menu) gingerbread house contest, and just sitting and talking. This year because of so much going ( military deployment, great grandbaby due, a family move etc ) we aren’t getting together. That’s why I decided to purchase experiences instead of gifts. I don’t have to mail anything. Purchase tickets online and have sent to each family. I love you gave us ideas to do now so I can enjoy the day with husband and it will still feel special though we don’t have our family with us.

Great idea about the experiences and saving postage. At least there are video calls now so it is still possible to see family even if they are miles away. x

Like you I buy my mincemeat in January when it’s cheap. Will make pickled onions and beetroot in the next couple of weeks. I have already done jars of brandied cherries. I also make my own Christmas cake and pudding in October. We put aside some money monthly and I pick things up during the year.
I already have several presents and even though my son is 20 he still wants a stocking and that is full of little cheap items I gather through the year. I even do one for the dog and his is already complete!
I also but meat and fish when on special offer and freeze.
I agree often experiences are a better gift. This is what my husband and I tend to get each other as we have enough stuff!
    Fabulous post Toni!

I went through all my Christmas decorations and reorganized everything when I took them down last year so that is all sorted. The only thing on my list to buy is a wreath for my door and it’s something that I’ve wanted for years so I will start keeping my eyes open soon.
When I decided to reorganize a lot of paperwork etc. earlier in the Summer it included going through all my wrapping paper, gift bags, tissues paper, bows and cards. Aside from a few special cards I am all set there as well.
Most gifts these days are either experiences or consumables so that does make life easier. For other folks – like the caretakers at the office – it is Gift Cards so I will start buying those next month.
I happened to pick up some turkey thighs just last week and they have gone into the freezer. I find that thighs and a turkey breast are easier than a whole bird. I will also buy a small ham. In Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving in October so we can often get good deals on turkey and ham afterwards so it is a good time to stock up. I also start buying the treats around the end of October and I often use saved up Loyalty Points or I cash in the contents of my coin jar and this goes towards baking extras. I work for a church so Christmas is our busy season so have to be organized ahead of time!

Lots of lovely ideas Toni. We make some food gifts for each other in our family, usually a little basket with treats that the giver knows the receiver particularly likes, such as my daughter always makes my husband ginger cake with lots of crystallised ginger pieces. We only buy presents for our grandchildren.
My building society were offering a 7% regular savings account for 1 year last October so I have been putting some in each month and it will mature just in time for Christmas, plus I have been saving all my nectar points and adding some vouchers from lifepoints, so I will have more than enough.
We enjoy Christmas but it’s very low key in our family, no fuss and bother. This year my younger daughter and family will come to us for Christmas Day.

Good ideas Toni , I hate a stressful Christmas, and love homemade goodies . Our adult sons always get a large Toblerone ( it fits nicely in a stocking ) . I’ve made a start , as they were on offer in B&M . It was upsetting as we’ll likely have our first Christmas ever without the eldest . I’m pathetic! Had a little weep in the shop. I’ve bought sausage meat when it was reduced to make sausage rolls . We save 20 pence pieces all year , so there’s enough to buy a Turkey crown . I also save my Nectar points so there’ll be at least £20 to use on Christmas extra’s . I always buy Christmas cards in the January sales . I’ve frozen a plum and almond cake , and will stash some nice casseroles for the Twixmas week . It’s usually when we enjoy simpler fare.. I make a square Christmas cake and halve it , I then ice it as two rectangular cakes and give one as a gift to a friend . I’m not keen on it , so this size is plenty for us . I’m hoping our youngest son and family will be coming on Christmas Day , we’ll finalise this shortly . I try and keep a present drawer all year, I buy things on offer and stash them .

I spoke to family members about Christmas and said did they fancy doing a secret santa for the adults and just buy for the children and everyone was up for it, we did one at work last year and is was far less stressful and expensive. I have to say I was nervous of their reaction but it was taken very well.
