Utilising the free heat of the sun inside

I have a conservatory on my house. I bought it with some of my retirement money in 2015. It was an extravagance but I had always dreamed of having a garden room. Every one warned me not to get one. They said it will be too cold in the Winter and too hot in the Summer.  It is actually the best thing that I have done as it provides an extra resource to my home that has different uses through out the year.  It has saved me money as well.
In winter I just open the internal doors and the wood burner from the kitchen warms it so that we can still use it as a dining room if we are entertaining..  It is nice and light in there and so some times it makes winter less dreary, especially on a sunny day.   As it is cool in there during the winter months when the internal doors are closed, but out of the frost, it is also a great place to store things like vegetables and potatoes in a box for longer storage. or some over wintering plants.
I admit it does get very warm in there in summer, but is fine with the doors open, or else we sit outside. I use the heat to my advantage, though.  I can dry clothes in there if it starts to rain, and I can dry things like harvested Quinoa, dried herbs or home made fruit leathers.
I can even cook in there.  I made some Moroccan stew yesterday (brown lentils, Harissa paste, home made passata, tomato puree, paprika, onion and veg) and cooked some rice also, mainly using the power of the sun in my conservatory.  It was an unusually hot day. I boiled both pots for 1 minute and then placed them in the hot, sunny room in direct sunlight. The rice was ready in 2 hours and the stew in nearly 6.  I have even fried eggs in there on a hot baking sheet that I left in the sun.  It brought back memories of my Girl Guide days when we would cook eggs and drop scones on hot rocks in the sunshine.
The sun warms the house in Spring and Autumn if I open the inner doors to the house.  Sometimes I will capture the heat and sit in there on an evening using the solar lights, enjoying the residual heat from a sunny day. I love to listen to the rain in there tapping on the roof, knowing that I am dry and warm. Every year I grow most of my seedlings in there in Spring as it means that I can start them off a lot earlier. and it acts like a giant green house.  I most admit that they start to take over the table and we have to eat in the kitchen if the last frost is late.
All of my rooms in my house have different uses during different seasons, and we spend different amount of times in them, depending on the time of year.

Well, I’d say that you certainly get your money’s worth out of your conservatory!

Absolutely. It is my happy place, too.

A bit like you, our conservatory is a multi-tasking room. On a morning it can get very warm even on less sunny days and so when I can’t dry outside we dry clothes in here. I have 2 layouts of the conservatory. In winter we don’t use the door onto the garden so I put the sofa across the door and close the blinds behind it making it a sort of wall making it feel more cosy. It can become a messy play area as its a laminate floor and its brightness even on a dull day makes it a welcoming place to sit and have a cuppa.

I agree. Mine is laminate too. I go to get some light on a dark, dismal, winter today. Good idea to change to lay out. Thanks for sharing
