Cinnamon bagels the easy way.

Easy cinnamon bagels

Mr S fancied some cinnamon bagels.  I only want to spend £20 on food this month and so didn’t want to buy some, and couldn’t be bothered to make some the proper way.  I therefore made them using yoghurt and flour, as I had seen on the internet ages ago.  They turned out nice and were easy to make.  It is also something that I can make with the staples that I already have in.  I will make these fortnightly from now on, as a treat.  They turned out much better than I expected.

Ingredients.

1.5 cups of plain flour

2 tsp of baking powder

Big pinch of salt about half a tsp.

1 cup of plain, Greek yoghurt (or thick home made)

1 heaped tsp of icing sugar

2 tsp cinnamon

1 cup of sultanas or dried raisins

I egg to make an egg wash

Mixed seeds or sesame seeds for decorating.

Method

  1. Put the yoghurt into the bowl and add all of the other ingredients, except he egg and seeds.
  2. Form a dough.  If it is too sticky add a bit more flour, if it is too dry add a tiny bit more yoghurt. (all yoghurts and flours are slightly different).
  3. When your dough feel right, divide it into 4 or 6 (I made 6).  .Mine was quite soft but not sticky
  4. Form into long sausages and then join the ends to make a bagel shape, and squash together.  I tried  different ways to form them, including just poking a hole in the middle of a ball and flattening it a bit.  With the sausage way the holes stayed, but tended to close up when a hole was poked (as shown). With hole just poked in the middle
  5. Put on to a tray if baking in the oven, or in the air fryer (I had mine on a silicone mat so that they didn’t stick).
  6. Beat the egg and wash the top of the bagels, and sprinkle the seeds
  7. Bake in the oven at 180C for 20 to 25 mins depending on the size. (I did mine in the air fryer on 180C, turned them over at 12 minutes, and back over again at 18 minutes.  Mine were ready in 21 minutes, but I had made them smaller by getting 6 out of the mixture).

These took about 10 minutes to make the dough and form them.  It was a great way to use up yoghurt left over from last week.  We had them with cream cheese on top, but butter would be fine.  Next time we are going to try different flavoured savoury ones, as they will be good to make for lunch.  Have you made bagels this way, and if so, what flavours have you used, please?

I think that the only down side is that they will not store as long, but yes they were so easy, and quick to make. Thanks for commenting

They look delicious and sounds so simple. I will definitely be giving these a go. I love a cinnamon and fruit bagel but have been disappointed with the lack of flavour in shop bought ones recently. Thanks for sharing your recipe x
