I asked my Face book group what they do to keep their sitting rooms cosy whilst remaining frugal. These are some of the things that they come up with.
- Have different cushion covers to the ones used in summer. Maybe have them in autumn or winter colours.
- Place throws or blankets on the settee or chairs to keep warm to snuggle into on a cold evening.
- Decorate the room with nature eg pine cones and berries.
- Use lamps instead of the main light.
- Light candles. These might have winter smells.
- Put fairy lights up
- Have a hot water bottle on your lap
- Have some large leaf green plants
- Use warm coloured light bulbs
- Have thicker curtains over the windows (and draw as soon as it gets dark).
- Put down wool rugs if it is a wooden floor.
- Use oil burners or have a pot with cinnamon sticks, herbs, and sliced oranges simmering on the wood burner if you have one (or use essential oils)
- Have a roaring fire if you can.
- Add seasonal ornaments
- Have draught excluders against the doors to stop draughts.
- Sit with a warm hot chocolate in your hands.
- Have a cat or dog to snuggle up with.
Lots of great ideas! I would love to have a fireplace, but alas not. But, I do switch out my cushion covers and throws and keep some hot water bottles on hand. I do add a few more lamps and I have candles – both real and battery powered. Soon, I’ll decorate for Christmas and the little fairy lights on the tree will add more light. I’m not good with plants but will get one or two poinsettias to brighten things up.
Yes Poinsettias make the place feel Christmassy in a classy way. Thanks for sharing
I bought a pack of flickering battery operated candles that have a 6 hour timer on them. I placed them around the house and they definitely have given the house a cozy ambience in the evenings. I’ve also added amber light bulbs to the table lamps. They give off a vintage western glow vibe. Love the cozy vibes. Great list.
That sounds lovely and cosy. Thanks for sharing
