On thing that I started growing about 5 years ago is Pak Choi. It has a lovely mild flavour, is easy to grow. Pak choi is usually one of the first annuals that I harvest each spring. I usually use it in stir fry, but today I air fried pak choi with aromatic spices. It can also be cooked in the same way in an oven. This was a side dish for 4 people.
Ingredients
Pak choi (depending on the size do one or a half per person). Mine are large.
Oil or butter (I did a mixture of both and used olive oil with my 25g of butter).
Some grated fresh ginger (about a cm)
Half a large red chilli, chopped small
2 cloves of garlic, minced
Method
1. Clean the pak choi to make sure that there is no dirt lingering.
2. Chop the pak choi in half and place in an oven proof dish cut side up. I cut a little bit of the top of the leaves off to make them fit in the dish. (I used the trimmings in a stir fry, later).
3. Melt the butter in a small bowl and add the chopped chilli, ginger and garlic. Stir. Add some oil until you have enough to baste the amount of pak choi that you have.
4. Brush the melted, spicy butter over the pak choi. I have a silicone pastry brush.
5. Place in the air fryer and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, until slightly tender. If it starts to char too much, you can turn it over.
This air fried pak choi made a lovely side dish for a Chinese meal that I made for a family celebration, and was enjoyed by all. It is simple and healthy. Pak choi has so many nutrients in it, but tastes milder and sweeter than cabbage. It is full of vitamins C and A has more calcium in it than spinach.
Do you grow pak choi? It doesn’t need a lot of space.
I’ve just planted my second sewing of small pak choi plants yesterday so this was good timing. Funnily enough the seed pack suggested a really wide spacing between plants which I thought was odd so yesterday I planted much closer together. How far apart do you plant them?
I only have 3 or 4 inches between them as I grow them in containers.
This looks lovely! I have never considered growing this but I think i must give it a try. Thank you! I always enjoy your posts.
I got given a packet a number of years ago and I love it as it is my first new vegetable harvest of the year. It helps me get an extra crop in as it grows so quickly.
I’ve never grown them how soon have you sown them indoors ? X
I sowed the seeds in a tomato punnet indoors half way through March. I potted them on a April. At the end of April I potted some in a raised box. Those are ready now. Some others I am growing in a plastic trough. The rest I am holding back in plant pots in the greenhouse and replacing them as I harvest them.
I do grow Pakchoi but have only ever used it in stir fries before. I will try using the airfryer next time thank you.
No worries. Thanks for commenting x
