Chocolate Oat Tray Bake.

I was given a few bags of oats that have short dates on them. We no longer eat breakfast and so I can’t use them in porridge. I then remembered a chocolate tray bake that my Aunty used to bake when I was young. I think it was the early 70s.

I don’t make this recipe a lot as it uses 250g of butter. However, I have a lot of butter in the freezer as I made some with reduced cream after Easter, and it was selling for £1 a block at Farmfoods. We therefore stocked up to save money later. I am not a big fan of flapjack but like this as it is half flour and half oats which gives this bake a nice texture.

Ingredients

250g butter, melted

175g oats

175g self raising flour

140g sugar

15g cocoa

A handful of mixed seeds (optional)

100g bar of chocolate (optional)

Method

Mix all the ingredients, except the bar of cocolate, together, until well combined.

Place in a greased tin. Mine was 8″ by 10″ but I remember my Aunty used a Swiss Roll tin.

Bake in the oven at 175⁰C for about 20 minutes.

Let it cool completely before removing from the tin. Decorate with drizzled chocolate if desired.

I used Aldi chocolate as they are reduced to 59p at the moment. It would be fine plain with out a topping.. My Aunty used to cover it with icing made from icing sugar, cocoa and water, but that would be too sweet for me now. I guess that one would need about 200g of chocolate to cover the whole thing. As I wasn’t totally covering my traybake with chocolate, I marked out the squares whilst the chocolate oat tray bake was still warm.

This recipe is so easy to make and you can adapt and decorate it however you like. I have put chopped nuts in it before. The seeds are added so that I can tell myself that it is healthy. 😇 Do you remember this recipe from the 1970s?

I wonder if an oil, perhaps coconut or a light veg would work to make it vegan? I will have a try!
