No bake chocolate orange slice

I fancied some chocolate and we had nothing in that was sweet except for some cheap Aldi chocolate.  I therefore made this no bake chocolate orange slice as I did not want to put the oven on, and it is easy. I adapted a few other recipes to make it cheaper as they all had more ingredients in them.  I am never making this again as it is so morish, and I keep going into the cupboard to pinch some more.  Initially I intended to make a peppermint chocolate slice, which I have made before, but this was nicer.   I guess that you could make any flavour that you choose. The tin I used was 8 x 8 inches.

Ingredients

Base

100g of butter

2 tbsp of sugar

2 tbsp golden syrup

2tbsp cocoa

140g of rich tea or digestive biscuits, crushed (you could use any broken biscuits).

Orange layer

250g icing sugar

a few drops of orange essence (we make our own with vodka and orange peel).

a few drops of orange food colour

2 tablespoons of hot water

Chocolate top

200g of chocolate (milk or plain, or a mixture).  I just used Aldi cheap stuff.

1 flat tsp of coconut oil, or any oil (optional but makes the chocolate easier to slice).

Method

  1. Line the tin with greased proof paper.
  2. Make the base my melting the butter, sugar, syrup, and cocoa in a pan and add the crushed biscuits.  Mix together and put in the bottom of the lined tin.  Allow to cool.
  3. Make the orange layer by putting the icing sugar into a bowl, adding some drops of flavouring, and then add the water slowly until you get a stiff fondant.  Add more water if required.  I then added my colour and kneaded it into the fondant.
  4. I put the fondant onto the base and pressed it down and stretched it out over the base with my fingers and the palm of my hand so that it covered all the base.
  5. Put the broken chocolate into a bowl and add the coconut oil. Melt in the microwave in 20 second bursts and stir until melted.
  6. Pour the chocolate over the fondant and leave to set in a cool place.
  7. Slice and eat when set.  Mine made 20 pieces

It is easy to make and was so much nicer than I expected. I am warning you, though, you will not stop at one piece!

It sure is, which is why I cut it in smallish pieces, but that didn’t work as it is morish and so I end up having two or three!

Very nice, but no orange at all. Just essence and colour (sorry color).
I think boiling a whole orange for an hour, then blitzing it with a blender, makes a lovely orange paste, perfect for desserts.

You are absolutely right but I did make the orange essence with orange peel and vodka. I will give your method a go. Thanks so much for the tip. I will try that.
