Halloween activity and treat

These are an easy activity to make with a child and the saltiness of the pretzel sticks with the chocolate tastes lovely.  If I had some lolly sticks I would have made this into a lolly, as it would have worked well.  They were nice served on a plate, though.  I had bought some of these pretzel sticks last year to make snow man arms but then did not get time to make them.  They cost me about £1 from one of the discount shops like Poundland.  These are not particularly healthy but are easy to make as a Halloween treat.

Ingredients

Pretzels

2 or 3 different coloured bars of chocolate. (I used 2 of the cheap Aldi bars plus a bit of dark chocolate I had already for the spider).

A pack of pretzel type sticks.

Edible eyes (or you could make your own from fondant or chocolate.  My eyes cost £1 from a discount shop.

A silicone mat or baking parchment.

Method

  1. Snap 3 pretzel sticks in half and make a star shape on your silicone mat or paper.
  2. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, checking and stirring every 20 seconds (or melt in a water bath)
  3. Put a blob in the middle to hold the sticks together.  This is the body of your spider.
  4. Drizzle the chocolate using a teaspoon around the web, making sure that it is thick enough to attach to the pretzel. (can pipe if you want)
  5. I did 2 milk chocolate layers and then 2 white chocolate layers in between
  6. Add a bit more chocolate to your middle blob and spread it out a bit to make legs if you want, and add eyes.
  7. Leave the chocolate to set for 30 minutes.
  8. Lift the chocolate off the parchment and it is ready to eat.
  9. I stored some in a tin to be eaten later that day.

A cheaper version is to just join the sticks together with a blob of chocolate and add eyes.  These would be good on a table of Halloween goodies. These would have looked better if I had piped them but I wanted to try them as most children would make them,

I am saving the rest of the pretzel sticks and sealing them well to use for Christmas decorations for my table.  Watch this space!  Have you made anything for Halloween this year?  Here are things I have made in the past.
