Knowing how to make simple, tasty meals from cupboard staples is a life saver. It saves on shopping as there are no expensive ingredients, and keeping it simple means no technical cooking methods.
A few humble ingredients can save you time, reduce waste, save money, and help you stretch your weekly shop for a few more days. I find that it makes me more creative and also makes meal planning easier. Every week I slot a number of cupboard staple meals into my menu plan.. They are especially good for lunches. Sometimes I will add homegrown veg or fridge gravel (bits and pieces left in the fridge) to bulk them out, or switch them up. Meat or fish can also be added to some. Here are a few simple recipes.
Classic Tomato Pasta
Ingredients:
• Pasta
• Canned tomatoes
• Garlic or onion
• Olive oil
• Salt and pepper
Cook the pasta, simmer the tomatoes with garlic, and toss everything together. Finish with dried herbs or grated cheese if available. It is fine just like this, but any fridge gravel can be added. I might add a wizened bit of pepper, a grated carrot, mushrooms, a bit of tuna or chopped ham, or some wilted spinach. If the sauce tastes too bitter, you can just add a little sprinkle of sugar or a bit of ketchup.

Egg Fried Rice
Ingredients:
• Cooked rice
• Eggs
• Soy sauce
• Frozen peas, or any leftover vegetables
Scramble the eggs, stir in the rice and cooked vegetables, and season with soy sauce for a quick and satisfying meal.
Baked Potatoes with Toppings
Ingredients:
• Potatoes
• Butter
• Cheese
• Beans or tuna
I tend to bake my potato in the microwave and finish off in the air fryer if I don’t have the oven on for baking. This is a good way to use left overs like chilli, bolognaise, or curry instead of the tuna, as well. These potatoes were actually cooked in the slow cooker.

Lentil Soup
Ingredients:
• Dried or canned lentils
• Onion
• Carrot or any spare veg (even frozen)
• Stock or water
Simmer until tender for a warming, protein-rich soup. Sometimes I will add a can of tomatoes, some puree, and herbs or spices to make it nicer. To make it more filling, some broken bits of spaghetti can be added.
Bean Quesidillas
Ingredients:
• Tortillas (or wraps)
• Canned beans
• Cheese
Mash the beans, spread on tortillas, sprinkle with cheese, and cook until golden. I have also mashed tinned makeral in spicy sauce, and filled them with this and added cheese. You can fill them with leftovers like chilli as well.
Chickpea Curry
Ingredients:
• Canned chickpeas
• Onion
• Canned tomatoes
• Curry powder
Simmer and serve with rice, chaphati, or flatbread. Sometimes I will add a chopped sweet potato or other veg. The flatbread can be made with just water, salt and flour, or yoghurt and flour.

Omelette
Ingredients:
• Eggs
• Cheese
• Leftover vegetables
I add what ever I have to omelettes. Herbs like chives work well with the cheese. I don’t always have cheese to add. On those occassions I will add onion, or left over veg. It makes a great main meal by adding salad and chips, but we also eat it on it’s own for lunch.
Tuna Pasta Bake
Ingredients:
• Pasta
• Canned tuna
• Canned tomatoes or white sauce
• Cheese
Mix, top with cheese, and bake until bubbling. I tend to cook my pasta first, but many people don’t. If I don’t have tuna I will add what ever I have, like a bit of cooked ham and cooked veg. I also make them totally veggie sometimes.
Shakshuka
Ingredients:
• Eggs
• Canned tomatoes
• Onion
• Spices
Poach eggs in a spiced tomato sauce and serve with crusty bread. I also add fridge gravel vegetables to this, or items harvested from my garden.

Potato and Onion Frittata
Ingredients:
• Potatoes
• Onion
• Eggs
This is like a Spanish omelette cooked in an air fryer or oven. Simple, filling, and excellent hot or cold. This kind of crustless quiche is great for picnics.
Peanut Noodles
Ingredients:
• Noodles or spaghetti
• Peanut butter
• Soy sauce
• Garlic
Cook the spaghetti or noodles. Add cooked garlic, soy sauce, and peanut butter and mix. Creamy and packed with flavour. We also add veg with the garlic, sometimes.
Homemade Pizza Toast
Ingredients:
• Bread
• Tomato sauce and tomato puree
• Cheese
Toast the bread on one side. Mix the tomato puree with the tomato sauce (a squirt of each). Spread over the uncooked side of the toast with the cheese on top. Cook until the cheese is melted. I like to add herbs and garlic to the tomato sauce if I have them and will usually cook and add onion or fridge gravel to add as a topping. These are also nice done on pitta bread, flad breads, or wraps.
Pancakes
Ingredients:
• Flour
• Eggs
• Milk
Serve with sweet or savoury toppings depending on what you have available. This is a great way to use leftovers like chilli or bolognaise.
Rice and Beans
Ingredients:
• Rice
• Beans
• Onion
• Spices
A nutritious and budget-friendly staple enjoyed around the world. I will often add tomato puree and chilli to it.
There are so many other meals that can be made from cupboard staples. Cook from your pantry when ever you can to save running to the supermarket. It will save you money and stretch your shopping. I find that having the following staples helps.
• Pasta and rice
• Eggs
• Potatoes, and bread, or wraps
• Canned tomatoes and puree
• Beans and lentils
• Onions and garlic
• Cheese
• Frozen vegetables
• Herbs and spices
What are your cupboard staple cupboard favourite meals? Mine are potato nachos, or a wrap quiche .

One of my favourites is Turkish yoghurt and eggs.
Plain yoghurt
Eggs
Little butter
Chilli flakes, smoked paprika
Optional- grated garlic
If you like garlicky yoghurt, grate some into a bowl of yoghurt. Fry eggs till little crispy but yolks still runny. Put them in a bowl with yoghurt. Melt a little butter with chilli flakes and paprika, pour onto the eggs.
I know it sounds bizarre, but its actually delicious. Cold yoghurt, hot eggs, little oomph from the spices. And because of how much protein in it, its filling.
I think Mr S would like that. I am not keen on yoghurt, except with fruit. Thanks for sharing. I will try it.
These are excellent examples of thrifty and tasty meals! Thank you.
No worries. Thank you
It’s good to have a few solid but basic meals like these to fall back on when either the fridge or the brain is feeling empty! Cannot go wrong with a jacket potato!
Absolutely. It is one of my favourites
Great list of ideas here. I try to keep a good pantry of ingredients like these so it is easy to find something to cook if money istight.
Brilliant. They are lifesavers sometimes. Thanks for sharing
Tuna noodle casserole is another one. Minestrone soup Great ideas for when you can’t get out to buy groceries ❤️
Absolutely. Just adding some orzo or broken up spaghetti can turn a soup into a filling meal
Excellent plans base for those pantry meals. I like to add those bits and pieces leftover from other meals into dishes – like leftover greens, beans, and squashes
Me too. The only down side is that you can never replicate the meal 😁
Some lovely simple ideas, I thoroughly enjoy a jacket potato.
Me too, especially on a cold winter’s day. Thanks for your feedback
Excellent ideas some great protein rich meals on a budget 😋
Thank you
Some really good ideas for using up bits and pieces, and quick meals – both of which I need to do. Ideal for one person too which is really useful. Fridge Gravel is ever present in my life and I hate to waste it.
I always have bits and pieces as well. Using it saves so much money. Thanks for sharing
Some great economical tasty meal ideas. . 👍🏼👍🏼

Thank you ! Cannot wait to try these .. starting with the Tuna pasta bake 😋
Brilliant. It is one of our favourite staples. Thanks for commenting
Thank you, Toni. You have given me lots of ideas.
I have £90.00 worth of Nectar points that I have been hanging on to for a rainy day. Given the looming food crisis, I think that day is fast approaching.
Fingers crossed that there won’t be. A crisis, but buying now will definitely save you money. That is a nice lott of points to have.
Some lovely ideas for c99k8ng on a budget, proving meals don’t need to be boring. Thank you
Thank you. Yes and you can make a meal out of anything. Thanks for commenting
Fantastic ideas – I’ve written some down to do. It just shows that if you look at your food differently, you can make a meal, it doesn’t have to be something you’ve always done (which means you go to the supermarket to get the ‘missing’ ingredients). You can make a meal with what you have. Thank you for the recipes and the ideas.
No worries. Thanks for your lovely feedback
Brilliant as always Toni. Soya sauce, yeast extract, balsamic vinegar, always great for bringing depth to a meal. Some good options here to try, thank you.
They certainly are.. I bought nutritional yeast for the first time this year and I must say that I will buy it again.
Mattersons do a sausage that is vacuum packed and does need refrigerator. We liked the smoked one sliced to pasta/rice/on pizza etc. we keep them in the care as long life emergency food (motor way closure etc). Other brands available and I think there are a few options on flavour such as garlic.
Yes they are great. I used to take those in my case when we went abroad on holiday. They were great with a pasta sauce, or with scrambled eggs.
Great ideas my type of food simple recipies but adding variety I’ll be trying some thank you
Thank you, and thanks for commenting.
I’d never thought of using stale bread as a pizza base. I’ll be trying that over the weekend 😊
We often have it as a quick lunch. I like it on the end crusts. Thanks for commenting
Great ideas to save, a friend whose husband was retrenched uses recipes like this to help balance the budget, but they’re tasty, economical comfort food.
Absolutely. I 5hink some simple, old, recipes are the best.
I tried the potato and onion frittata and it was delicious thank you
No worries. Glad that you liked it
Loads of great ideas there! Thank you.
Thanks for your lovely feedback
Great ideas. I keep meaning to make frittata. My favourite cheap cupboard staple has to be dhal. Green or red lentils. Also a buckwheat, quinoa or chickpea version of a tabbouleh (can’t have gluten so no bulgur wheat or couscous) – great for using sad bits of salad, so not totally storecupboard though!
Those are lovely meals. Thanks for sharing
Great ideas Toni. I love a baked potato. When I buy a bag of spuds I usually pull out the big one and bake several at once, then pop them in the freezer for a later date.
Great idea
Great ideas for simple meals with your store cupboard ingredients.
I like simple meals with few ingredients which are easy to cook and nutritional.
Thanks for sharing Toni.
Me too. I think cooking has become too complicated over the years. Give me a 1970s recipe book any day
Great variety of meals. Thanks for posting these definitely looking forward to trying a few of these recipes.
Thanks
Excellent suggestions, thank you Toni.
My standby is corned beef hash; 1 tin each of corned beef (chopped), tinned potatoes (drained), baked beans (or any beans), carrots and/or peas, and tinned tomatoes. Plus gravy granules or a stock cube / herbs to season. Used to be a camping favourite as it only needed heating, no other prep.
I used to like something similar when camping. Thanks for sharing
Love all these dinner ideas.
One of my favs is simple garlic pasta with Parmesan.
Add cooked spaghetti/linguine to olive oil with some garlic cooked in it. Sometimes I add small cut tomatoes if I have them.
Thank you for these ones.
That is a lovely, simple one. Thanks for sharing
