One of the reasons I went away recently was to do some ‘grounding’ or what some people call ‘earthing’. Grounding is when your body has direct contact with the earth’s electronic charges which helps one feel more balanced, stronger, and less stressed. The earth acts like a giant battery that can subtly charge you. All our cells emit electrical frequencies that manage our heart, breathing mechanisms, nervous systems, immune systems etc in our bodies.
All living things are connected to the earth. Years ago we would have been running around barefoot, or working on the land, or even sleeping on the floor. Now we as humans wear synthetic shoes, have tarmac, carpets, live high above the ground, and travel in cars etc. We have lost that connection. Small scale studies have shown that grounding can help with anxiety and depression, sleep disorders, chronic fatigue, pain, blood pressure, stress, inflammation, and hypertension. People even blame some of the increase in illness around the world due to lack of grounding.
There are different types of earthing or grounding. These include walking barefoot, being in water like the sea or a river, lying on the ground, gardening with bare hands and I have even read about people connecting metal rods between themselves and the earth. You can also buy grounding mats and socks.
I have found walking barefoot in the sea and on the sand works best for me and doing that this yesterday has really reduced my sense of stress and overwhelm, and increased my energy level. You can build it into your everyday life by grabbing a few minutes outside and laying down in a garden or a park, sipping a cup of tea outside in the garden with your shoes and socks off, gardening without gloves on, or holding on to the branches of a tree (some people hug trees). Mother nature is a brilliant healer, how about trying to fit a few minutes of grounding into each day?
I always love to be barefoot on the grass when I’m in the garden but after reading your blog I shall make a conscious effort to make this a daily routine. Thank you for your wonderful website that is helping me find myself!
Aww I am so pleased that you are finding your authentic self and thank you for your lovely feedback
Definitely going to give this a go, I’m working hard on my overall well being. Thanks for the info :-)
No worries. I hope that all your hard work pays off. Thanks for commenting
I was told by an acupuncturist I should practice grounding by walking barefoot on the grass. I have always played with dirt as a child and have always gardened with out gloves on. I have immune problems but maybe they would be worse if I hadn’t? I don’t know if it is connected but I am very electric. I get shocks from the back door handle, also other things in summer even though I wear cotton most of the time. My son told me to put my bare foot on the step, if I do that I don’t get a shock.
Also about tree hugging.
A few years ago a lady used to walk past our house and she always stopped at a large tree nearby. We used to call her the mad tree lady because she bowed to the tree, hugged it and spoke to it. I now realise what she was doing but over 20 years ago I had never heard of tree hugging.
Yes I remember going on a retreat a number of years ago and doing tree hugging and I felt daft. I did not understand. Now I do it often! I do think that immunity is helped by some contact with dirt. My Dad used to be electric like that. I can remember him jumping when he touched a car door and hearing the spark. Thanks for sharing.
Walking on grass bare foot is a blessing .. dirt in the toes .. not so much . But living here in the mountains has definitely increased my health and wellbeing. Being able to walk in the forrest and not so much residential concrete and tarmac is a life style many dream of . Thank you for sharing . Love reading this .
Thanks. I am so glad that you have had the chance to improve your health naturally. Thanks for commenting
I have started grounding/earthing again lately. I had forgotten how beneficial it was to your health. Thank you for this Toni. We have become so disconnected from the Earth it makes me wonder if this has anything to do with so many people feeling out of sorts these days. It makes perfect sense when you look into the science and benefits of grounding not to give it a go. I have always liked going barefoot whenever I can.
